Bible Memory Verse: John 1:12-13

This week's memory verses have me thinking and rejoicing.

While traveling, we visited a church and attended a really cool Sunday School class. They had just started studying the Book of John and one of the class members said something about privileges vs. rights--something that really stuck with me. While memorizing this passage this week, I dug into that thought. Here's what I found...
A privilege is a special entitlement to immunity granted by the state or another authority to a restricted group, either by birth or on a conditional basis. It can be revoked in certain circumstances. In modern democratic states, a privilege is conditional and granted only after birth. By contrast, a right is an inherent, irrevocable entitlement held by all citizens or all human beings from the moment of birth. (Wikipedia)
The fact that God has given us the RIGHT to become children of God blows my mind. Being a child of God is an irrevocable entitlement.

How do we get that right? By believing in His Name--the Name of Jesus and what He did for  us by dying on the cross, paying the penalty for our (MY!!) sin, and then conquering death by His resurrection from the dead. Jesus certainly didn't have to pay the price for my sin, but He did. Voluntarily. Because He loves me. He loves us.

So tell me, do you have the right to become a child of God? And if you are a child of God, are you using that right correctly?

It's the Clothes

For over 25 years our church has done the Living Christmas Tree--it's a big production, requiring not just the full (and extended) choir, but drama people and many 'extras', which I've often been one of.

One time, when everyone arrived for dress rehearsal, they wished they had been extras, too. Why? You should have seen our costumes! Wowza, they were beautiful! Never in my life had I been able to wear a Victorian style outfit, but I always admired them, especially the hats. Guess what? I got to wear not only the hat, but the gorgeous dress to go with it!

During the Victorian scene I strolled along a 'street' with a (self-proclaimed) dapper gentleman. (Sorry, Jeff—you are dapper even though you have your shepherd's beard...er, rabbi beard. LoL) Wearing that outfit made me feel like a true lady--except for when it was hiked up to my knees and we were dashing to and from the dressing room. Strolling the aisles on Jeff's arm was quite an experience for me, and it's given me a better understanding of being clothed by God.

I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,  ~Isaiah 61:10

It's made me remember that God has dressed me in His righteousness, so when He looks at me, He sees the robe of righteousness that He has wrapped me in, not my abundant, ugly sin. It's not that I've done anything to deserve that most precious robe, it's a gift from God Most High, and those without that robe are sent away from Him.

But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen.
~Matthew 22:11-14

If wearing a Victorian dress and hat makes me look similar to a Victorian lady, wearing God's robe of righteousness makes me not just look the part, but BE the part.

The wrong clothes got the wedding guest kicked out of the wedding feast, and the right clothes get me into eternity with Christ. But it's not clothes that we can purchase ourselves. They've already been purchased by Jesus when He died on the cross to pay the penalty of our sins. He died and conquered death by rising from the dead. So it's not dressing in style, or out of style, or any particular kind of clothing—it's only through God's grace that we are dressed in God's righteousness.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. ~Ephesians 2:8-9

How thankful I am that God has given me the robe of righteousness—there is no greater gift He could give me.

So tell me, are you clothed in the robe of righteousness?

Are you acting accordingly or playing in the mud in your good clothes?

Are You Circumcised?

Monday Manna

Today is Monday Manna at An Open Book and it's nice to be able to participate once again! Here's what she chose for us today:
The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.
~Deuteronomy 30:6

Wowzers! What a doozie for today! It made me do some studying and that's never a bad thing to do! :) Circumcision is a word many of us shy away from—especially explaining what it is...at least when it's referring to the physical act. LoL But this isn't talking about physical circumcision.

Circumcision is not something you can do for yourself—physically or spiritually. God is the only One who can circumcise our hearts. How? Through the blood of His Son, Jesus. He purifies us and sets us apart for Himself.

Taking the view that circumcision means to purify or set apart helps me understand this more...God will purify our hearts so that we can love Him with everything in us and live—really live. We're not to live for ourselves, but for God alone. In Him we have newness of life and through Him we have eternal life and out of love for Him we are to live lives that glorify God. That's when we're really living, when we're living full-out for Him.

What a promise this verse holds for us! It's not just talking about us, but about our children, too, and as women and moms, we're all concerned about our children. It's not that our faith can save our kids—each person is responsible for their own faith, but as we live for God, our children see our faith and it affects them and influences them, leading many of them to salvation. What greater gift can we give our kids than the gift of salvation and God's love?

It all starts with God circumcising...purifying...our hearts so we can love Him and live.

Are you loving God with all your heart?
Are you really living—living for God?

My Free Gift

The greatest gift I've ever been given is forgiveness.
Without Jesus' death on the cross, I would be paying the penalty of my sin: death and eternal separation from God. But thanks be to God, Jesus paid for my sin, and by accepting the gift He's offered to me, my sins are forgiven. Through Christ, I have God's love, His peace and joy and salvation. How blessed I am!

This is, ultimately, what Christmas is all about.
